Episode 98
Hashtags, Presents & Perhaps The Tensest Winner Plays On Yet
Show broadcast on 2 January 2016
Happy New Year! Elis and John are back, and nothing's changed - expect thoughts on a nuclear apocalypse, an outside opinion on casting for Josh, and the usual overload of Welsh and Queen references. There's a new feature - Elis' Gig Diaries - and of course the usual Winner Plays On (it's incredible this week. Remember farthing-gate?), and Humble Brag Of The Week.
Podcast intro
There's fall out from what sounds like a controversial Winner Plays On coming up on the show. Elis researches Wales' "top pirates".
John's introduction of Elis
"To my left, a man responsible for petitioning the government to introduce a new Welsh currency based mainly on sand. "
Conversations and riffs
John was given a guide to post-apocalyptic survival for Christmas but his main concern is how he'd keep his beer cool. His girlfriend also got them a holiday to Barbados and John got her... an electric toothbrush.
As a New Year's resolution, John has deleted all his iPhone games. To fill the void, John has started an Instagram feed featuring pictures of pubs that he visits.
PCDs have sent in pictures of Elis and John themed Christmas presents they received.
Elis receives news that his baby daughter has stood up for the first time, prompting John to check how her progress compares to the average.
Following the airing of potential scripts for the second series of sitcom 'Josh' over recent episodes of the podcast, the co-writer of the sitcom, Josh Widdicombe, has passed on some feedback.
Text-in topic
Listeners text and tweet during the show on this week's topic.
Do you have examples of major disparity between gifts you and a loved one have bought each other?
Elis' Gig Diaries
Elis reads aloud from diaries he kept during his early stand-up days.
Following a clear-out, Elis has found his old gig diaries from when he was starting out as standup comedian.
This week he takes us back to June 2006. A lack of relevant banter causes Elis to ruin the buzz John had created in his preceding set. He has some very harsh words of advice for himself and receives a critique from the gig promoter.
Humblebrag
More examples of that scourge of social media, the humblebrag.
Wish people would stop comparing your appearance to famous model Chrissy Teigen (so many hashtags).
Winner Plays On
Elis and John face off in the weekly quiz on topics of their choice.
Boris Becker (Elis) v Brian May (John). Elis wins 4-3. John is very unhappy with the questions and believes Elis has made "a massive misjudgement". John wants his next topic to be "the philosophical concept of nothing" but Producer Dave is not OK with that.
The 'Keep It Session' Sessions
A special section at the end of the podcast for music recommendations.
The start of a new feature. This week, 'Peaches En Regalia', a track by Frank Zappa (John)
