Episode 175
Oxford Shame Toilet, The Past is a friend & Brewster's £500
Show broadcast on 24 June 2017
John went to the past this week. He's happier there. Elis kept a steady hand on the tiller whilst John broadcast from a reunion he was attending in Oxford. All the usual badinage carried on in abundance though, with some abhorrent Humblebrags, some cracking emails, a predictable Beta Bet and a revealing chat with John's high-flying Oxford pal, Chris.
John's introduction of Elis
"Elis' intro of John: To my north, despite being 35, he's coming all the way from a university halls of residence because he can't let go of his past."
Conversations and riffs
John is broadcasting from Oxford University where he is attending a reunion. Elis gets the low down from a couple of his old uni friends about the young John Robins.
John also had a new experience attending a big stadium gig (in fact, visiting a football stadium was a new experience) when he and Vin went to see the Stones Roses at Wembley. He made sure to leave early (before 'I am the Resurrection') to avoid congestion at the tube station.
Elis James' Light-Hearted Paper Review
Elis' selection of humorous stories from this week's newspapers.
Blowers is retiring from cricket commentary. Jo Wiley doesn't care about being cool, she is obsessed with her garden. Liam Gallagher referred to himself as "truth juice". A golfer's ball was blown into the hole by the draft from a landing air ambulance.
John's Shame Well
John frees another listener of their shame.
Lying that you used to be a top indie DJ to impress new work colleagues, then being asked to DJ the office Christmas party. Get set up with a Spotify playlist, only to realise the venue has no wi-fi and you are reliant on the music stored on your computer. End up playing an entire Wham! album and 'Don't stop believing' by Journey twice. It is never talked about again by work mates, not even in jest.
Betabet
Elis and John compete to name as many things as possible on a theme in alphabetical order in 30 seconds.
Verbs in the English language. John thrashes Elis 17-0. Or 16-3 if words like 'catching' are accepted rather than 'catch'.
Made-Up Games
Listeners suggest made-up games that Elis and John can play.
The first of a new series - Made Up Games (MUGs): A listener emailed in with a suggestion of a made-up game she plays with her friends called 'Nut, wood, seed' in which one of you mimes putting one of those things in the other's hand and they have to guess whether it is nut, wood or seed and what type.
Email of the Species
Listeners' emails into the show.
Dating tips from the guys.
The 'Keep It Session' Sessions
A special section at the end of the podcast for music recommendations.
